COUNTRY / PROBLEM
Georgia is a country located on the border between Europe and Asia. The economy of this state – which has a population of almost five million – is based mainly on agriculture (cultivation of grapes, citrus fruits, and nuts) and the extraction of deposits (such as manganese, copper, and gold). Georgia is completely dependent on the imports of natural gas and petroleum.
According to official statistics, almost 22% of the country’s population lives below the extreme poverty line.
ORGANISATION
Caritas Georgia started its operations in 1994 to serve the people who had difficulty in finding their way in the aftermath of the political changes associated with the collapse of the Soviet Union. In particular, Caritas Georgia focuses on the needs of the people living below the poverty line who are most vulnerable people, including homeless children who have no parental care, the sick and the disabled, lonely elderly people, refugees, forcibly displaced people, and members of impoverished rural communities.
Caritas Georgia cooperates with local and international organisations. As part of the “Children and Youth Program”, Caritas Georgia takes care of children from poor families who, because of poverty, are forced to work on the street. In Tbilisi, the organisation provides children with shelter and meals.
PROJECT
Kulczyk Foundation supported Caritas Georgia’s relief projects for children and youth.
