COUNTRY
Madagascar is an island state off the south-eastern coast of Africa, with a population of 25 million,000,000. It is the fourth largest island on Earth.
The country is very poor. It is estimated that 70% of the population lives below the poverty line. It is a young society – almost 60% is under 25 years of age.
Madagascar’s inhabitants live mainly in rural areas, which have a poorly developed infrastructure. Nearly 80% of the population finds employment in agriculture, fishing, and forestry.
Local residents have limited access to health care and education. Despite the constitutional right to free primary education, not all children go to school, and only two thirds of the population are literate.
ORGANISATION
SEED Madagascar (formerly Azafady UK) is a British charity that carries out projects aimed at protecting the environment and supporting sustainable development in the south-eastern part of the island.
SEED Madagascar conducts all the projects in cooperation with local communities to ensure that their work will help solve the most serious problems. One of the organisation’s activities is the construction and renovation of schools in south-eastern Madagascar. The organisation also supports small businesses of the inhabitants.
PROJECTS
Kulczyk Foundation donated funds to Azafady UK (presently SEED Madagascar) to finance the complete refurbishment of a school in Hovatraha and to support women embroidery project - Stitch Sainte Luce.
