COUNTRY
Malawi is a small country in Southeast Africa, inhabited by almost 20 million people. As a result of climate change, weather phenomena (such as El Niño) are causing agriculture, on which the economy is based, to produce insufficient crops. Farms are small and often inefficient.
ORGANISATION
Partners In Health (PIH) is a non-governmental organisation established in 1987, which specialises in medical assistance. The organisation’s strategy is based on the assumption that, in order to solve a problem, it is necessary to get to its root, and, in developing countries, often the main cause of diseases is poverty. This is why PIH combines medical activities with other types of support.
In the district of Neno in Malawi, the organisation collaborates with Malawi’s Ministry of Health to provide comprehensive health care benefiting almost 160 thousand people. The most severely ill are treated in hospitals, and numerous health workers (‘Village Health Workers’) bring help directly to people’s homes. The most needy receive food aid and financial aid, and, in some cases, the organisation also covers the costs of education. What is more, being in close contact with the community allows the organisation to take effective preventive actions.
