Malawi – Partners In Health in Malawi

COUNTRY

Malawi is a small country in Southeast Africa, inhabited by almost 20 million people. As a result of climate change, weather phenomena (such as El Niño) are causing agriculture, on which the economy is based, to produce insufficient crops. Farms are small and often inefficient.

ORGANISATION

Partners In Health (PIH) is a non-governmental organisation established in 1987, which specialises in medical assistance. The organisation’s strategy is based on the assumption that, in order to solve a problem, it is necessary to get to its root, and, in developing countries, often the main cause of diseases is poverty. This is why PIH combines medical activities with other types of support.

In the district of Neno in Malawi, the organisation collaborates with Malawi’s Ministry of Health to provide comprehensive health care benefiting almost 160 thousand people. The most severely ill are treated in hospitals, and numerous health workers (‘Village Health Workers’) bring help directly to people’s homes. The most needy receive food aid and financial aid, and, in some cases, the organisation also covers the costs of education. What is more, being in close contact with the community allows the organisation to take effective preventive actions.

PROJECTS

Kulczyk Foundation donated funds to Partners In Health in Malawi for:

  • supporting a nutritional programme – purchasing therapeutic food for at least 244 undernourished children,
  • purchasing more than five tonnes of Likuni Phala – vitamin-fortified porridge based on maize and soybeans,
  • supporting the POSER (Program on Social and Economic Rights) social welfare system – financial aid for families in need, and coverage of school fees (purchase of uniforms, books and other materials, examination fees) for over 300 children,
  • supporting the housing programme,
  • supporting the health care system in Neno district by partly paying for the wages of more than a thousand Village Health Workers.

In Malawi, there are only two physicians per 100,000 people. This is one of the very lowest rates in the world.

Social awareness programs

Our aid projects help us understand the problems the modern world is facing. Our documentaires and educational programs drive change across societies .

Documentaries

Our documentaries shine a light on community problems in different parts of the world, and present organisations and local unsung heros who benefit from our support. In Poland, the Domino Effect TV series is created in cooperation with TVN - the largest private television in Poland. Through this work, we are able to reach those who might have never heard about a specific issue or the way in which they can help. This partnership results in a number of long form documentaries, which have been recognised at international film festivals. As part of our partnership with the CNN Freedom Project, we also produce a series of documentaries for English speaking audience. The series explores the issues of modern slavery and human trafficking, and is regularly broadcast on CNN International.

Educational programs

Since the beginning of its existence, the Kulczyk Foundation has been working to shape the socio-emotional competences of children and adolescents. We prepare unique lesson plans adapted to various stages of education. These focus on explainining the complex world of universal values and emotions, encourage reflection and the ability to draw conclusions. Ultimately help to build knowledge about ourselves and the world, and to shape attitudes towards the reality that surrounds us. As part of this commitement, we also provide workshops, conferences for teachers and faculty staff. We believe that wise education, implemented in a spirit of freedom and empathy, is a basic component of sustainable development for every human being, as well as a chance for a good start in adult life. No matter where they are from.
