COUNTRY / PROBLEM
Malaysia is a country with a population of over 31 million people, located in Southeast Asia, on the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo. A part of the Malaysian society are stateless people, including Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, indigenous people originating from India, and descendants of illegal immigrants from Indonesia and the Philippines. Also stateless are the Bajau people, who, among other places, live in the northern and eastern areas of Malaysia.
For several hundred years, the Bajau people inhabited inshore waters, spending almost all the time on boats and living off fishing – the sea was their home. At present, few of them live in the traditional way, and most are discriminated against. Frequently, the Bajau people fail to obtain appropriate documents that would allow them to work legally. Some of them live in makeshift huts built on stakes driven into the seabed. Children have limited access to medical care and education.
ORGANISATION
PKPKM Sabah (Persatuan Kebajikan Pendidikan Kanak-Kanak Miskin) is an organisation that helps many Bajau children in Malaysia’s second largest state – Sabah. It aims to provide its beneficiaries with education and broadly-defined care. The organisation runs 10 centres, where it gives support to nearly two thousand children.
PROJECTS
Kulczyk Foundation supported educational initiatives of PKPKM Sabah.
