COUNTRY / PROBLEM
Nepal is a country located in South Asia, in the central part of the Himalayas. The inhabitants of this country are among the poorest in the world. The state social welfare system is not sufficient to ensure the safety of and care for the children who live there. Human trafficking is a major problem in this country, with girls and women being at particular risk.
ORGANISATION
One way of combating human trafficking is through an effective border control system making it difficult for traffickers to smuggle their victims into other countries. The border between India and Nepal, which is more than 1,700 kilometres long, is open and virtually uncontrolled. The free movement of people and goods was intended to improve trade cooperation between the two countries and thus contribute to the development of their economies. The border is used by intermediaries involved in human trafficking.
3 Angels Nepal (3AN) is an organisation founded by a victim of human trafficking. Its employees are engaged in both preventive action and rescue of slaves, as well as rehabilitation of human trafficking survivors.
One way that 3 Angels Nepal combats human trafficking is a system of checkpoints along the borders. Its employees and volunteers make efforts to identify victims of human trafficking. They make sure to prevent such persons from leaving the country and help those rescued return home.
PROJECTS
Kulczyk Foundation supported the organisation by strengthening the system of checkpoints on the Nepal-India border created by 3 AN, the organisation’s key tool for saving human trafficking victims and helping those at risk, as well as by backing activities aimed at preventing modern slavery.
