Poland – BARKA

COUNTRY / PROBLEM

According to the latest study coordinated by the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy, in 2017 there were over 33 thousand homeless people in Poland. This problem mostly affects men (over 80%).

One can become homeless for many reasons – family conflicts, job loss and debts, alcoholism or any other type of addiction can contribute to the lack of a permanent place of residence. Living ‘on the street’ makes it difficult to integrate with the society and, without support, it is very hard to find a way out of this situation.

ORGANISATION

Barbara and Tomasz Sadowski established Barka in 1989 to help the most vulnerable people. Since then, their initiative has grown significantly – Barka is now a network of associations operating in Poland and number of countries whose aim is to support the most vulnerable people, including the homeless, the addicted to alcohol or drugs and ex-prisoners.

Barbara and Tomasz Sadowski have received many awards for their achievements to date, both in Poland and abroad. They were seperatly awarded Ashoka Fellowship, Tomasz Sadowski in 1996 and Barbara Sadowska in 2001.

PROJECTS

Kulczyk Foundation supported the Barka network by donating funds for:

  • modernisation and retrofitting of an organic farm in Chudobczyce – purchase of a new greenhouse, polytunnel, irrigation equipment, and other gardening tools;
  • retrofitting and renovation of the dining part and the Barka’s building in Chudobczyce;
  • renovation and retrofitting of the canteen at the primary school in Sieraków.

Different kinds of people come to Barka. They are often criminals, crooks and thieves. Nobody trusted them until now. Barka is different. This was also Tomek’s case. When he came to Barka, he was supposed to be responsible for the warehouse. He got the keys. He could have thought that is could all be stolen and sold. But he understood that the trust he was given was worth much more.

Social awareness programs

Our aid projects help us understand the problems the modern world is facing. Our documentaires and educational programs drive change across societies .

Documentaries

Our documentaries shine a light on community problems in different parts of the world, and present organisations and local unsung heros who benefit from our support. In Poland, the Domino Effect TV series is created in cooperation with TVN - the largest private television in Poland. Through this work, we are able to reach those who might have never heard about a specific issue or the way in which they can help. This partnership results in a number of long form documentaries, which have been recognised at international film festivals. As part of our partnership with the CNN Freedom Project, we also produce a series of documentaries for English speaking audience. The series explores the issues of modern slavery and human trafficking, and is regularly broadcast on CNN International.

Educational programs

Since the beginning of its existence, the Kulczyk Foundation has been working to shape the socio-emotional competences of children and adolescents. We prepare unique lesson plans adapted to various stages of education. These focus on explainining the complex world of universal values and emotions, encourage reflection and the ability to draw conclusions. Ultimately help to build knowledge about ourselves and the world, and to shape attitudes towards the reality that surrounds us. As part of this commitement, we also provide workshops, conferences for teachers and faculty staff. We believe that wise education, implemented in a spirit of freedom and empathy, is a basic component of sustainable development for every human being, as well as a chance for a good start in adult life. No matter where they are from.
