Romania - Policy Center for Roma and Minorities (PCRM)

COUNTRY DESCRIPTION

Located in the south-east of Europe, Romania is the seventh largest country in the European Union in terms of population. According to some estimates, there are currently around two million Roma living in a country with a population of over 21 million. Although they are officially full Romanian citizens, on average one in three of them experiences discrimination on grounds of their ethnicity. The Roma are particularly vulnerable to poverty, have problems finding legal advice, and often do not have access to education – nearly 60% of 16 to 24-year-olds do not attend school and do not work.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISATION

Policy Center for Roma and Minorities is a Romanian NGO founded in 2008. It promotes the social integration of Roma and other ethnic minorities. The aim of the organisation is to empower these groups so that their members become active citizens of the communities in which they live.

The Policy Center for Roma and Minorities focuses mainly on helping Roma living in Bucharest’s poorest and most dangerous neighbourhood, Ferentari. It runs a programme of alternative education for children, which gives them an open and safe space to learn and develop. Children participating in the programme not only learn to read and write in Romanian and English, but also receive support in doing their homework, and can benefit from sports, art, and cultural activities.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Kulczyk Foundation has supported a sex education programme implemented by the Policy Center for Roma and Minorities for girls of Roma origin aged 10-18, and has financed one-year dance classes for children who are beneficiaries of the organisation and live in the Ferentari neighbourhood.

Social awareness programs

Our aid projects help us understand the problems the modern world is facing. Our documentaires and educational programs drive change across societies .

Documentaries

Our documentaries shine a light on community problems in different parts of the world, and present organisations and local unsung heros who benefit from our support. In Poland, the Domino Effect TV series is created in cooperation with TVN - the largest private television in Poland. Through this work, we are able to reach those who might have never heard about a specific issue or the way in which they can help. This partnership results in a number of long form documentaries, which have been recognised at international film festivals. As part of our partnership with the CNN Freedom Project, we also produce a series of documentaries for English speaking audience. The series explores the issues of modern slavery and human trafficking, and is regularly broadcast on CNN International.

Educational programs

Since the beginning of its existence, the Kulczyk Foundation has been working to shape the socio-emotional competences of children and adolescents. We prepare unique lesson plans adapted to various stages of education. These focus on explainining the complex world of universal values and emotions, encourage reflection and the ability to draw conclusions. Ultimately help to build knowledge about ourselves and the world, and to shape attitudes towards the reality that surrounds us. As part of this commitement, we also provide workshops, conferences for teachers and faculty staff. We believe that wise education, implemented in a spirit of freedom and empathy, is a basic component of sustainable development for every human being, as well as a chance for a good start in adult life. No matter where they are from.
