COUNTRY / PROBLEM
Sierra Leone is located in West Africa. Poverty is ubiquitous in this country, with nearly half of the population of working age engaged in agriculture for their own needs. The country has significant mineral, agricultural, and fish resources. It is still recovering from a crisis resulting from the civil war that ended in the early 2000s, though.
In 2014, an Ebola epidemic broke out in Sierra Leone, which caused a significant drop in economic activity. Although the World Health Organization announced the end of the epidemic in late 2015, it was not until 2017 that economic growth was recorded.
ORGANISATION
Founded in 1987, Partners In Health (PIH) is a non-governmental organisation that specialises in providing medical assistance. The organisation operates based on the idea that in order to solve a problem, it is necessary to address its cause, and, in developing countries, often the main cause of diseases is poverty. Therefore, PIH combines medical activities with other kinds of aid.
PROJECTS
Kulczyk Foundation provided funds to Partners In Health in Sierra Leone for the care for Acute Needs Program beneficiaries, who include people in need of food, transport, and all other forms of social support.
