COUNTRY / PROBLEM
Sudan is located in the north-eastern part of Africa. The country has been tormented by riots and armed conflicts for years, and its state of affairs has been identified as one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
Due to weak economic growth caused by sanctions and difficult environmental conditions, Sudan is listed among countries with the lowest human development index. It is estimated that over 13 million people are in need of humanitarian help, of which more than 2 million are internally displaced persons. Over 46.5% of the population live below the poverty line. Access to water constitutes one of the major problems inhabitants of Sudan are facing.
ORGANISATION
Concern Worldwide is an international humanitarian organisation, established in 1968 in Ireland, which has been providing aid in Sudan for years. It carries out relief efforts in crisis situations and implements long-term development programmes in West Darfur as well as West and South Kordofan.
The organisation focuses on supporting those who are most at risk of hunger and lack medical care, while providing communities with access to drinking water and sanitary facilities. The beneficiaries of Concern Worldwide include internally displaced persons who were forced to abandon their homes as a consequence of armed conflicts.
PROJECTS
Kulczyk Foundation gave its support to the project involving the purchase and distribution of menstrual kits amongst women and girls in West Darfur. Each set included hygiene products and reusable sanitary pads. Women can use them during menstruation for many years.
