COUNTRY / PROBLEM
The Philippines is an island country located in Southeast Asia, inhabited by over 100 million people.
Due to its location, the Philippines is often affected by natural disasters. In November 2013, one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorder – Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) – devastated parts of the country. The number of deaths exceeded six thousand people, and several thousand people were declared missing. In the aftermath of the typhoon, many Filipinos were left homeless, there was not enough drinking water and food, and the infrastructure was destroyed.
ORGANISATIONS
All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response (formerly All Hands Volunteers) efficiently and effectively addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. The organization rebuilds safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure.
Volunteer for the Visayans organisation aims to reach out and improve the lives of communities and individuals in a manner that is responsible and sustainable.
Elsa Thomasma, who cooperated with Volunteer for the Visayans when approached by Kulczyk Foundation, was an American volunteer who raised funds for Cangumbang Community Center & Typhoon Shelter, where the local residents found shelter during Typhoon Yolanda. Every single member of that community survived.
