COUNTRY / PROBLEM
Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. In 2013, a wave of demonstrations and protests began in the country’s capital, Kiev. These reflected the citizens’ opposition to the decision of the country’s president, Viktor Yanukovych, to postpone the signing of the European Union association agreement, which distanced the country from Western democracy and closed the road to development. The opposition demanded that Viktor Yanukovych be removed from his position. The protests turned into a nationwide Revolution of Dignity. In 2014, a conflict broke out in Ukraine, as a result of which, to date, over 10 thousand people have died, over 21 thousand have been injured, and over two million have been forced to leave their homes. In Ukraine, more than 3,5 million people are in need of humanitarian aid.
ORGANISATIONS
Pizza Veterano is an initiative created by Leonid Ostaltsev, a veteran who organises workshops for orphans and free pizza deliveries to veterans in hospitals. For the founder, this is a kind of therapy after war experiences.
Caritas Archidiecezji Warmińskiej gave shelter to number of Ukrainian families of Polish descent, who suffered as a result of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. In 2015, a six-month governmental adaptation programme was launched. Individuals who participated in the programme took Polish language classes, and children attended Polish schools.
