Nepal – the Domino Effect

International projects

The situation in Nepal might not seem that complex, and yet it is terrifying. The poor – struggling to get a handful of rice – are taken advantage of by criminals for drug trafficking. They take the risk but frequently end up in jail, a result of which is their children being similarly condemned. If the children remain free and don’t go with their parents, their relatives turn their back on them. Yet if they remain with their parents in prison, they have nothing to eat or drink, as the system does not make any provisions for children of imprisoned parents.

In Kathmandu, we learned of two organizations that look after children pulled out from prisons. One of them is led by Indira who has been helping the children of prisoners for 25 years. Another person fighting for the children involuntarily behind bars is Pushpa. She learned the truth about these children during her internship in a prison as a student. The program also features Lashmi, the oldest child in her care, who does not want to return home although her mother was released from prison several years ago. Dominika Kulczyk and her foundation will provide funds for part of a fantastic new home for children, among other investments. Watching her conversation with Pushpa is a must!
