Poland (SOS-WD) – The Domino Effect

Projects in Poland

Few of us realize that there are about 1 million orphans in Europe. Or that 77,000 out 7 million children living in Poland are orphans. In most cases, their parents are alive but their parental rights have been restricted or taken away from them. Only one of every ten children in in foster care has lost one or two parents. And yet being an orphan always hurts in the same way.

Fortunately, there are organizations like the SOS Children’s Villages Association. This international organization has been operating for over 70 years in more than 133 countries of the world. In Poland, it runs four Children’s Villages: in Biłgoraj, Kraśnik, Karlin and Siedlce.

The foundation, directed by Dominika Kulczyk, has provided funding for audio-visual equipment and the renovation of their day-care centere. We witness emotional moments when the director of Kulczyk Foundation visits Małgosia, the SOS village mother who looks after siblings from two families. We can see the family’s daily life and learn more about the story of 18-year-old Janek. The boy will tell us more about his difficult childhood, relationships with other siblings and something that gave him strength to boldly move forward.
